Hivelords and Sadgiqacea Are Embarking on a Joint Summer Tour

Hey folks, if you live in the eastern half of the U.S. (that is, anywhere between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River, plus just a little further west in the case of Kansas City, Columbia, and Des Moines), you’re in for a real treat sometime in the next six weeks. Two Philadelphia-based bands who each play a uniquely interesting variant of black metal — Hivelords and Sadgiqacea — are heading out on the road, starting tomorrow night in New Jersey, and spiralling their way through the northeast, midwest, and southeast, before finally finishing up back in Philly at the end of July.

I saw these bands last July when they both played a show in Pittsburgh, and it made for a pretty amazing experience. I’d highly recommend it if you are able. I’ve got a video from each of their performances at that show, below, and then I’ll share the full list of dates for their current summer tour.

Hivelords

These guys play a pretty furious style of metal, that attacks all the senses simultaneously, and gives off a post-apocalyptic vibe. One of the most memorable things about them was that the vocalist stood next to a huge speaker cabinet, with two microphones and a large array of effects pedals, giving his voice a wide assortment of different sounds — all of them scary as hell. I don’t know for sure what it’ll be like this time around, because it’s been announced that Ardent Vein (an artist from Washington state) will be performing vocals with Hivelords on this tour.

Anyway, their most recent album, Cavern Apothecary (Anthropic Records) was released last July — and ranked among my favorite releases of 2013. Listen to the album here, or buy it here.

Sadgiqacea

This difficult-to-spell group consists of two members — guitar/vocals and drums/vocals — but with all the howling and screaming and noise that comes out of them, you’d never guess their music wasn’t performed by a whole army. Most of their songs are rather long, with plenty of twists and turns that make it easy to get terrifyingly lost in the walls of sound.

Their last album, False Prism (Candlelight Records / Anthropic Records) was also released in 2013 — a fact which I obviously did not realize at the time I was compiling my year-end best-of list, or it definitely would have made it on there as well. Listen to it here, or buy it here.
